Since 1998 he has been Director of the Epilepsy Unit at the Ruber International Hospital in Madrid, a pioneering centre for the diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment of epilepsy in children and adults.

More than 150 neurologists and neurophysiologists from Spain and Latin America have been trained here, and several of its students have successfully opened epilepsy centres in other public and private hospitals, both in Spain and abroad.

The program he directs has become a pioneer in Spain in the field of genetic diagnosis of complex epilepsies and advanced treatments such as drug repositioning, interstitial laser treatment, deep electrodes and gamma radiosurgery, which are used in patients with refractory epilepsy.

Dr. Antonio Gil-Nagel is a professor at the IE University, is an Ad Honorem Professor at the Center for Biomedical Technology of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (CTB) and is Director of the Epilepsy Department at the Francisco Vitoria University of Madrid.

The Epilepsy Program he directs is an international benchmark in the development of pharmacological research. He has been the Principal Investigator of phase II and III clinical trials, including numerous clinical trials and non-pharmacological treatments (epilepsy surgery, electrical stimulation, ketogenic diet and gamma knife). His research is funded by European Union funds and the Public Innovation Agency of the Ministry of Science and Innovation of the Spanish Government. Er wurde in Niğde, dem zentralen Teil Anatoliens, geboren. Er besuchte die Oberschule in Adana. Er schloss sein Studium an der Medizinischen Fakultät der Universität Ankara ab. Er begann seine Karriere 1987 am Bakırköy-Krankenhaus für Neurologie in der Klinik von Dr. Zeki Oral und schloss seine Facharztausbildung in Neurochirurgie 1993 ab. Während dieser Zeit schloss er seine Ausbildung in Mikroneurochirurgie, die für ihn einen Durchbruch darstellte, an der Universität Zürich „Professor M. Gazi Yaşargils Klinik“ ab.

Zwischen 1993 und 2003 arbeitete er als Lehrassistent und dann als Assistenzprofessor an der Klinik von Professor Necmettin Pamir, Medizinische Fakultät, Marmara-Universität. Gleichzeitig erzielte er klinische und chirurgische Erfolge auf dem Gebiet der Neuroonkologie und der vaskulären Neurochirurgie an der Klinik von Professor Donlin M. Long und Daniele Rigamonti an der Johns Hopkins University, USA. Im Jahr 2003 erhielt er den Titel eines außerordentlichen Professors für Neurochirurgie.

Zwischen 2004 und 2010 arbeitete er als Klinikleiter im Göztepe-Ausbildungs- und Forschungskrankenhaus des Gesundheitsministeriums. Während dieser Zeit machte er seine Klinik mit ihren Bildungs- und Pflegediensten zur einzigen von der EANS (European Association of Neurosurgical Societies) akkreditierten Klinik in der Türkei. Während dieser Zeit absolvierte er seine Ausbildung zur endoskopischen Schädelbasis an der Universität Pittsburgh.

Im Jahr 2010 begann er an der medizinischen Fakultät der Acıbadem-Universität zu arbeiten und wurde Professor für Neurochirurgie. 2012 gründete er die Abteilung für Neurochirurgie an der medizinischen Fakultät der Medipol-Universität. Von 2014 bis 2018 war er Leiter der Abteilung für Neurochirurgie in den Krankenhäusern der Memorial Health Group Istanbul. Von 2018 bis September 2021 war er mit seinem Team in der Abteilung für Neurochirurgie des Maslak-Krankenhauses der Acıbadem Health Group tätig.

Seit dem 01.10.2021 arbeitet er mit seinem Team in meiner Privatklinik im Fulya- und Ulus-Krankenhaus der Liv Health Group.

Er war Gründungsvorsitzender der „Skull Base Society“ in der Türkei. Außerdem ist er Mitglied des Exekutivkomitees der European Skull Base Society (ESBS).
