Osman Şevki Arslan is an ophthalmologist who developed three surgical techniques. These include Retrograde Glaucoma Tube Implantation for treating high eye pressure. He served as President of the Turkish Ophthalmology Association and founded the Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Eye Bank.
Specialization & Surgical Innovation
Dr. Arslan performs anterior segment surgery, including cataract operations, IOL implantation, and keratoplasty. He treats conditions such as glaucoma, keratoconus, and uveitis. He also treats eye complications in Behçet’s disease using iris and fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA). This method helps track eye involvement in patients with the disease. Dr. Arslan pioneered the Arslan closed cornea and Arslan covered cornea techniques.
Leadership & Professional Roles
Prof. Dr. Arslan held administrative roles in the Turkish Ophthalmology Association (TOD), serving as General Secretary from 2015 to 2017. He led the association as President between 2017 and 2019. He served on the executive board of the Cornea and Ocular Surface Unit for 29 years. He also served as a member of the TOD Cataract and Refractive Surgery Unit executive board from 2016 to 2018. Currently, he coordinates the eye clinic at Istanbul Florence Nightingale Hospital.
Research & Academic Achievements
The specialist has contributed to medical literature with 113 articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals. This total includes 57 international and 56 national publications. He authored one book and six book chapters while presenting 280 papers at conferences worldwide.
